It was another hot and humid day in the July sun. Fred, Joe and the other men were working on the last piece of track for the train to come through. In the distance, the sound of the whistle signaled that the time was drawing near for the train to pull into the new station.
As the men work diligently to put the finishing touches on the last piece of track, the foreman announced the President of the railroad was on the train! The men had worked fevorishly to get the job done on time. All of the men were tired, hot and thirsty. As the train pulled into the new station, there was an eerie silence as the President stepped off the train to inspect the work that had just been completed.
The President inspected the track and then looked up at all the men that were hot and perspiring profusely. Quietly, he walked over to the water station and poured a tall, cool glass of water and walked toward the men that had worked so diligently on this important project. In the following moments, he walked directly over to Fred, handed him the glass of water, said a few words, smiled, and then walked back toward the train. All of the men stood there in shock!
Joe then asked Fred, "Do you know the President?" Fred replied, "Yes, I do!" Joe then asked, "How is it that you know that man?" Fred went on to explain that the both of them had started working on the railroad together some 30 years ago. Bewildered and perplexed, Joe then asked Fred, "So how is it that he's the President and you're still laboring on the track?" And so Fred replied, "Thirty years ago, I went to work for ten dollars an hour ... he went to work for the railroad!"
