Ella walked enthusiastically to the art museum to attend a new showing. While enjoying the new additions to the gallery, a man approached her and asked, "If you had the opportunity to go into the past, what part of history would you like to see most?!" Ella exclaimed without a moment's hesitation, "The Pyramids of Egypt!" At that very instant, Ella was transported to the time that the pyramids were being built. What had just happened? How could this be?
As she walked toward the pyramids in awe, she met a man who was working at the construction site. Excited to speak with her first person from the past, she asked while gasping with anticipation, "What are you doing?" while still quite fascinated by this incredible experience. The man answered with a negative tone, "What do you mean what am I doing? I'm working feverously and trying to cut these stones to fit properly for this ridiculous pyramid so the king can have his monument to himself ... silly woman!"
Ella stepped cautiously away from what appeared to be a very angry and dissatisfied human being from the past. Ella wondered; there are so many people doing the same work; are they all angry and dissatisfied?
As she approached another man working at the site, their eyes caught each other's glance. Ella felt a bit more at ease, walked over and then politely asked the man, "What are you doing?" The man replied, "I am cutting stones for this pyramid and I am thankful to be able to do so because this work allows me to feed my family and provide a home in which to live. Ella noticed that the man's demeanor was not angry like the man before. He was committed to doing his job and providing for his family though no joy was felt for his labor.
Ella looked around for still another to speak to. The people of the past were not so different from her experiences of the present! As she approached still another, a man she was watching had a smile on his face while cutting the stones for the pyramid. The man's smile was so attractive that Ella decided to stop and ask him, "What are you doing?" The man looked up at Ella and gently replied, "I am cutting these stones for this pyramid so that generations of people will be able to see the contribution our people have made for all of posterity! What an honor it is to this work!"
The reply of the last individual sent Ella back into the present in a moment's flash. She then realized that while she spoke to three different people, they were all doing the exact same work, but with entirely different perspectives! The difference was their what, how and why they were doing it!
